GREATNESS THE SIGN OF A HERO

Dissonance

a: lack of consistency between one’s actions and one’s beliefs.

b: a mingling of musical intervals or chord that don’t go together

Matthew 18:1–5 (NRSV)

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” ²He called a child, whom he put among them, ³and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. ⁴Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. ⁵Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

Luke 9:46–48 (NRSV)

⁴⁶An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest. ⁴⁷But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, ⁴⁸and said to them, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.”

The Request of James and John

³⁵James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” ³⁶And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” ³⁷And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” ³⁸But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” ³⁹They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; ⁴⁰but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

⁴¹When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. ⁴²So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. ⁴³But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, ⁴⁴and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. ⁴⁵For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.

When asking something of our Lord I try to remember one of my favourite prayers by Dag Hammarskjold: – “Hallowed be Thy name, not mine, Thy kingdom come, not mine, Thy will be done, not mine, Give us peace with Thee, Peace with men, Peace with ourselves, And free us from all fear.” As for heroes, I may never be a great hero but I pray that our Lord can save just one soul through me, then my life will not have been in vain. Thank you Bruce for another great message, Greatness, the Sign of a Hero. It was only last night that I read Isaiah 42. Now for me there is no one greater who walked this earth than our Lord Jesus and here the prophet Isaiah speaks of Him as the coming Servant who will be the Light to the nations. Our Lord Jesus the ultimate Servant, willingly, totally obeyed His Father and willingly, totally,served us and ultimately gave His life for us, so that we may have eternal life and be most importantly reconciled to our Heavenly Father. The message that I sent was ditected to the Mayor of the city of Houston, Texas. Ihave received his replay with some contacts of several organization in Housto.
