Emma, thank you for telling your story. My mom gave birth to my youngest brother with Down Syndrome and a hole in his heart. The doctors and my father’s family advised my mom to put him in an institution. My mom was Catholic, and she said that my brother was a gift from God and she would raise him. Several times through the years when he was extremely ill, the doctors advised my parents “to make arrangements”. My mom remained in her faith. I have two daughters who have learning disabilities. They both have Fragile X and one of my daughters is also autistic. I thank you for sharing your story. Celine, my daughter has been traumatized with the Covid outbreak. I have been very impatient with her outbursts. What I have realized is that I need to let Celine be who she is — not this perfect daughter. Her younger sister, also affected by Fragile X, graduated with honors with her Bachelors’ Degree. I was listening to your father, and at the end he mentioned you. Your father was right you were awesome. My daughter has a friend that was the youngest of 6 children, and was a little bit spoiled. She got married and had a son who has autism. He has to have a lot of care. This has changed this young girl’s life for the better. We have a saying in my country ‘whoever doesn’t have a cross, they have a medallion’ which means exactly like you said, we all have a cross or a burden to carry.
